It's not economics, language, culture or gods. . .

the problem, as always, is SEX.

Without procreation there would be no nations,

so peace would prevail, one suspects.

Were we to cease going forth and increasing,
our need for policing would be decreasing.

Politicians and preachers would surely deplore it,

but the planet would be better off for it.

№ 335: Intelligence (Again)

Intelligence.

Blessing or curse?

As we get “smarter”

do we get worse?

We create problems.

Then we do “fixes”,

striving to find what
the optimal mix is.

Today's advance

is tomorrow's reverse.

The idea of “progress”

is often perverse.

We push boundaries,

introduce breakthroughs.

Many of which

are very bad news.

It's in our genes,

this peculiar resolve:

problems we make

we also can solve.

This unhappy instinct

our sole distinction —

leads us to the brink

of our extinction.

We muddle through,

though torn and tattered,

and some sometimes wonder

does it all matter?

Life is lumpy

and very unsteady

when you follow the credo

“Fire, aim, ready.”

Easy to see

in rear view 20/20:

the basis of Trump's appeal.

Those who were sinking

found themselves thinking,
“The you-know-who get
a much better deal.

This government's just for MINORITIES

who, frankly, deserve their low lot.

The good-for-nothings who,

WITHOUT WORKING,

want what we've earned

and take what we've got!”

Donald promised

he'd upend this trend,

making America great again.

With him in charge,
no more pretending
of THOSE PEOPLE sharing
in our happy ending!
(The only thing good there was to report:
in the popular vote he fell three million short.)

Voters in 2020 may tell
Donnie & Co., “Oh, go to hell.”
Pretty to think so.
Too soon to know.
(And, to be fair,
we may already be there.)
