№ 367.1: EXTRA! Obviously

Far be it from me to ever condemn,
BUT. . .that things are a mess is all down to THEM!

If only THEY
would leave for Mars* —
get off this Earth,
which is rightfully ours —
things would be peaceful
we would be thankful
and, for a time,
possibly tranquil
until that unhappy day when
one of us becomes a THEM.

№ 366: Hmmh. . . (or a failure to communicate)

Smithsonian: Everybody in Almost Every Language Says “Huh”? HUH?!

What makes this utterance the “universal word”?

What distinguishes us from other species
is a certain facility with making speeches.
In most every language from 'Are'are to Zway*
when we don't understand, “Huh?” 'swhat we say.
Whoever it was first gave speech a try,
whatever was said, “Huh?” was said in reply.

Judas Iscariot? Total loser!
That's how I feel.
And remember I
[claim I co-]wrote The
Art of the Deal.
Thirty silver. . .somethings?
(He couldn't get gold?)
I'd a done better
a millionfold.
When I sell gods,
I don't set low rates.
That's NOT how
Trump negotiates.

№ 363: CORRECTIONS

W. Shakespeare previously reported:
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.

The Daily Doggerel has learned from innumeral informed sources all of whom have requested anonymity that this is not true and, in fact:
It turns out, Dear Brutus,
the fault is in our stars
and all we can do
is be who we are.

C. Barny Robertson and James Milton Black previously reported:
When the roll is called up yonder I'll be there

The Daily Doggerel has learned from innumeral informed sources all of whom have requested anonymity that this is not true and, in fact:
When the roll is called up yonder,
I will not be there.
There ain't any “up yonder”
and ain't nobody there.

Dylan Thomas previously reported:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

The Daily Doggerel has learned from innumeral informed sources all of whom have requested anonymity that this is not true and, in fact:
Rage though we might
against dying light
when the curtain descends
that ends the play.

William Ernest Henley previously reported:
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

The Daily Doggerel has learned from innumeral informed sources all of whom have requested anonymity that this is not true and, in fact:
Being born behind the eight ball
is bound to take its toll.
You can't debate with fate.
And, oh, you have no soul.

The Daily Doggerel apologizes for any inconvenience.

BREAKING NEWS! This just in: I am being told that "innumeral" is not a word. We probably meant "innumerable".

№ 362: Get Me Rewrite?

“A lady asked Dr. Franklin, ‘Well Doctor, what have we got a republic or a monarchy?
A republic replied the Doctor. If you can keep it.”
— Dr. James McHenry, Maryland delegate to the Constitutional Convention

. . .national constitutions have lasted an average of only seventeen years since 1789.

Seventeen years? Goodness gracious, oh my!
Is that time enough for wet ink to dry?
As to the study of Constitutional Law,
you have to wonder whatever for.

Unrevealed “laws” can prove unreliable.
Especially when compared to the Bible,
the Quran, the Vedas and all Dialectics*
which are fixed, irrefutable and less eclectic
views of the place of the human race in Creation,
a subject still subject to some disputation.
After several millenia of intensive study
our understanding sadly's no better than muddy.

№ 361: Just Say No

Try to imagine what Donald'd be,
like, if he was tripping on LSD
or if he slipped into Tijuana
to do tequila and marijuana.
(Late night hosts could make a joke
about smoking crack with Diet Coke.)
OR if he — fingers crossed holding breath —
with some of his fans did him some meth.

I've tried and concluded because who he is,
he would remain just as he is
because, I must say in his behalf,
drugs have little effect on a sociopath.

№ 360.1: EXTRA! Half-Cocked Sessions Defrocked?

The attorney general’s words and actions led us, and hundreds of fellow United Methodists, to write a letter formally charging him with violating church doctrine.

I am always amazed
(this goes to my bias)
to discover “Christians”
who are not also liars.

Too many “Christians”
find their expression
in missing the meaning
and praising the message.

№ 360: Going Viral

Humans like to think of themselves as the dominant force of life on the planet, but stepping into the Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, makes you reconsider that perspective. . . .The more of the planet humans take over, the more we inadvertently make it a viral paradise, and a dangerous place for us to live.

We believe (by and large),
after the gods, we are in charge. . .
BUT civilization is viruses' plot
and sadly for us, true that is not.
It cannot be accidental that
what we do fulfills their potential.

Working for viruses is no bed of roses —
certainly not what you'd call symbiosis.
BUT if you're thinking nothing could EVER be drearier,
imagine being ruled by bacteria.

№ 359: Appalling Epistle To The Hopeful

What if the world turned upside down,
“South” on the “top”, “North” on the “bottom”?
If conquered and conqueror were to change places
languages, cultures, religions and races,
“perps” and “vics” would, of course, switch,
exploiters would be the exploited,
making a significant difference in which
groups are indicted and which invited.

Our nature does not have better angels
when we are dealing with “strangers”.
Instinct, experience and history predict
everything different endangers.

The arc of that history is not, in fact, long.
It does not bend, it meanders
slowly (or quickly) going nowhere,
dumping rampant disasters on hapless bystanders.

It is what it is,
say a prayer or a curse
because under Trump
it's getting worse.

№ 358.2: EXTRA! The Finagle Frontier Stardate 0.0.0.0 (a presidential proclamation)

Today, June 18th, let the word go fourth
I hereby decree the U.S. Space Force
whose initial mission will be, or course,
eliminating space-borne threats to our nation
the worst of which. . . no reservation. . .
Trump-hating Jeff Bezos
who rips off the Post Office.
When I order Space Force to blast his Blue Origin,
there'll be nothing left for Baldy Jeff to make porridge in.

This brandy new branch of the military
should concentrate on launching Hillary
into deep space, leaving no trace
of her voting majority electability.

This is, really, the best news yet.
If you love me, sign up,
be a real space cadet.

From now on we reach for the stars
under Space Force commander,
Princess Ivanka of Mars
where we'll deport Spanish-speaking illegal aliens
along with all stuffy Episcopalians.
This is moving quickly
and, as you know, I don't like to brag,
but all by myself I created the new Space Force flag.

№ 358.1: EXTRA! No Room At The Inn (Again)

USA Today: What Melania Trump, past first ladies have to say on 'zero tolerance'immigration policy
In a memo, [U.S. Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard III] Sessions said anyone entering the country illegally will be met with "the full prosecutorial powers of the Department of Justice."

But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not,
to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14 (KJV)

J-man said that? Well then, okay.
We'll see to it that the l'il buggers suffer.
We'll take their mommies and daddies away
and put them in cages in warehouses
in conditions so dire some few may expire
and so it goes in the corrupt Trump Empire.

№ 358: Comparative Religion

The Register: There are some 4,300 religions of the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, your attention divert,
today's center ring topic: Who Causes More Hurt?

Christians and Muslims? Historic bad news.
So, too, present day and Bible-time Jews.
That said, these three are not the worst.
Buddhists and Hindus are equally cursed.
Confucians and followers of Zoroaster,
when they're in power are a disaster.
Add Atheists, Animists, Wiccans, Sikhs
and, lest we forget, also ancientest Greeks.
The principal point of all belief systems?
Differentiation between believers and victims.
Baha'i, Shinto,Taoist, Jain
ALL the above share in the blame
for the calamity we call humanity.
Religions may differ in what is avowed
but killing the enemy is always allowed.

Some few cannibals may be more discreet.
'tis said they kill only what they can eat.

№ 357.1: EXTRA! What Sessions Mentions (or beware evil weevils quoting scripture)

There are two dominant places in American history when Romans 13 is invoked,” said John Fea, a professor of American history at Messiah College in Pennsylvania. “One is during the American Revolution [when] it was invoked by loyalists, those who opposed the American Revolution.”

The other, Fea said, “is in the 1840s and 1850s, when Romans 13 is invoked by defenders of the South or defenders of slavery to ward off abolitionists who believed that slavery is wrong. I mean, this is the same argument that Southern slaveholders and the advocates of a Southern way of life made.”
Who would not love
be there the day
Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III
passes away?
There, at the Pearly Gates, with St. Pete
on the day Jeff's called to meet
and explain to his maker
why all his life he was
such a Gawd-awful faker,
pretending to “Christian” ideals,
fortified by out-of-context appeals
to King James Bible chapter and verse
which read as a whole say just the reverse
of what he claims.
But, as you know, Jeff has other aims.

His maker's reprimand will be terse
and the result for Jeff will be worse
than that meted out to lesser political hacks
because his maker loves Hispanics and Blacks
more than He cares for White Hoods who claim
they know His will and do crap in His name.

№ 356: E=mc racist?

Guardian: Einstein's travel diaries reveal 'shocking' xenophobia

“Even the children are spiritless and look obtuse.”

“It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races.”

[in Ceylon people] “live in great filth and considerable stench at ground level. . .”

“Japanese. . .[o]ne has to love and admire this country. . . .intellectual needs of this nation seem to be weaker than their artistic ones – natural disposition?”

Just goes to show
as you'd expect
when no one's looking
saints aren't perfect.

If Albert wrote this
with total aplomb,
must we now disavow
the atom bomb?

But, please, let us not
jump to the conclusion
that Albert'd be down with
Trump's Klu Klux Kollusion.

Distressing, of course,
that he thought others vermin.
Einstein was Jewish
but Albert is German*.

№ 354: An Inside Scoop

WASHINGTON — Trump administration officials on Sunday accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of stabbing President Trump in the back, blaming him for the president's refusal to endorse a joint statement with other world leaders.

If you're wondering what
caused Donald Trump's Canada,
airborne, melt-down hissy fit,
now it can be told
our investigative reporters'
anonymous sources
have got us right to
the bottom of it.

Here is the deal,
we now can reveal
what Donald was thinking of.
Which before this
no one had even an inkling of.

You know what Sam Bee (accurately?)
called Ivanka, Crown Princess Trump?
You can bet your ass,
Daddy would not let that pass
with only a grunted, “Hrumpf!”

When Donald discovered
Ms. Bee is Canadian
Niagara of anger
started cascading in.

While Donald does care
when you mock his hair
and his teeny (too grabby) paws,
you must realize
if you criticize
Ivanka,
HE'S DECLARING WAR!

№ 353.1: EXTRA! So That's What's Become Of The Old Constitution

POLITICO: Meet the guys who tape Trump's papers back together
The president's 'unofficial filing system' involves tearing up documents into pieces, even when they're supposed to be preserved.

...White House aides realized early on that they were unable to stop Trump from ripping up paper after he was done with it and throwing it in the trash or on the floor. . .

Is it time to move on,
throw the towel in
and go with Trump's take on
Putin's watered-down Stalin?

Could it be, in the end,
that's how it works?
Divine Right Of Kings evolves
into Divine Right Of Jerks?

№ 353: Sooey Ungenerous

If Trump were not “human”
what might he be?
Though it is tempting to say
“chimpanzee”,
I won't because,
for all their shortcomings,
this false equivalence
is unfair to chimps
who in their love-life
do not employ pimps.

Though he moves faster,
he resembles a sloth.
(Which comparison would,
I know, piss him off.)
To say he's like them
is unfair to sloths,
who, unlike him,
stick to their troths.

As much as I'd like to
I really can't
say, basically,
he is an ant.
Ants are builders.
Ants are industrious.
Ants don't go bankrupt.
Ants aren't corruptive.

Also, in spite of his leonine roars,
Donald is not a lion.
Not with those weeny, if grabby, paws!
And that Don Jr. and Eric, his boys,
love killing lions
must needs cause me to pause —
this comparison just has too “bigly” flaws.

Is, perhaps, he more dinosaur?
A possibility we cannot ignore.
It's something about which we have to think.
But it can't be. Dinosaurs are extinct.

I could, I suppose, keep going on
(and on and on and on and on)
until — O! Happy Day! — Donald is gone.
When there's an end to daily bum-pity-bump,
when we are rid of this cancerous lump,
when we've seen the last of Donald Trump.
