№ 538: Dinner

I consider myself vegetarian
even though I eat meat
Attempting to live an ethical life
can only end in defeat
because before we were human
our ancestors “chose” flesh over rumen-
ating creating
an ethical quandary:
(Reminder to self: need to do laundry.)
for us to survive,
for us to thrive,
many animals
regrettably die.
Had things evolved in
their — not our! — favor,
life might have had a
quite different flavor.
Whether you dine,
whether you're meat.
Enjoy your dinner.
Bon appétit!

№ 530: Humility

Is being a rank mediocrity
worse than being a failure?
If mediocre's the best you can do,
then, at least, you have an excuse
for all your shortcomings and flailings.
(Not to mention your doggerel railings!)

By definition, half of us will
always score below average.
Big pond/small fish vs
small pond/big fish is
something you have to
learn how to deal with.

Whether you choose
to stay in your place
or try instead to
pick up the pace
you're going to lose
in the human race.
That is a fact
you have to face.

The very best thing
about our democracy:
some have the chance
to achieve mediocrity.
Many who do
tend toward grandiosity
and tell us their story
with humble pomposity.

It matters not
at the end of the game.
When the asteroid hits
we're all the same.

№ 442: The Problem

With all our differences
our difference IS
NOT in skin tone embedded —
it's not geographic or ethnic.
It is not religious — and this is critical
despite what you think, it isn't political.
It's not genetic and it isn't sexual.
(And it's for dead certain, it ain't intellectual.)
It's not favorite comics or economics,
it isn't the language we speak,
the songs we sing,
the flag we salute,
our favorite pursuit,
if we pollute,
who's more hirsute.
None of these is really to blame.
Withal these differences,
we're all the same.

We can't get along
because I'm-right-you're-wrong
is always the name of the game.
THAT is THE problem!
(It's a GDF! shame.)

All the way back
to Pandora's jar,
our problem, as always,
is, sadly, WE ARE.

№ 416: Oh The Humanity!

The Humane Society always says that
it's best to spay/neuter your dog or your cat
to make them peaceful, calm, better behaved,
less liable to act up, less likely to stray.
May I suggest, if that be true,
couldn't we do it with children too?

№ 383: Another Way Of Looking At It

Close your eyes, real, real, REAL tight
and think WHAT IF Donald and Putin are right?
WHAT IF better angels of human nature
are fictions fit only for funny paper?
WHAT IF Hitler, Stalin and Mao
are what you always get anyhow?
WHAT IF Liz One and sis, Bloody Mary,
are as good as it gets? Isn't that scary?
IF Black, Yellow, Brown or Red were “White”?
WOULD anything be different in hindsight?

Then open your eyes. Blissfully reminisce.
Had you kept your eyes shut, you would not have seen this.

№ 382: Last Man Standing

Guardian: Footage of sole survivor of Amazon tribe emerges
Man believed to be in his 50s seen swinging an axe to fell a tree in Brazilian forest

Loggers, farmers and land grabbers murdered and expelled indigenous populations in the area in the 1970s and 1980s, and the man is believed to be the only survivor of a group of six killed during an attack by farmers in 1995. [He] has lived alone in an Amazon forest for at least 22 years. He was first located in 1996 and has been monitored by Funai [the Brazilian government indigenous agency] ever since. A glimpse of his face filmed in 1998 was shown in the Brazilian documentary Corumbiara.

Civilization.
Take it of leave it?
(Freud said it bred discontent.)
And if it kills everybody you know,
you would avoid it — to an extent —
and pray to the gods,
known and unknown,
for civilization to leave you alone,
though it will not,
it's not apropos,
so you may find yourself
with your own Truman Show.

№ 377: Vehemently In Favor

Medium: “May We Live Long and Die Out”
A global movement to extinguish the human race
. . .VHEMT (pronounced “vehement”) for short — a worldwide crusade of at least 9,000 people who have voluntarily decided not to have children. The idea behind VHEMT is that Homo sapiens have caused so much damage to the planet already that the only thing that can restore the balance is for humanity to go extinct, and the only humane way to do that is by refusing to procreate.

. . .The ideal world population is somewhere between 1.5 billion to 2 billion, according to a study published by three Stanford ecologists in 1994.

Let us ponder the question, putting it thus:
Would the world be better without all of us?
Of course, were a major source of pollution.
Our extinction might offer a partial solution.
But if we were fewer and not quite so dense
might not that be enough recompense
for the messes forever we're making and hence
some could live on if two-thirds were gone?
That does make some sense.
However, if history is something to go on. . .

AND what of our Ponzi economy
which works when everything's growing?
Fewer consumers mean few workers,
fewer jobs. (And fewer shirkers.)
Nice idea, though, this VHEMT.
Pity it comes with shoes of cement.
Presuming, as do all notions human,
what we do makes a diff and also assuming
we can duct tape damages caused
and do what we do with nary a pause,
ignoring that we are but Nature's phlegm,
’til she clears her throat with a mighty, “Ahem!”,
restoring the world without MEN (or WOMEN), Amen!

Welcome to the Anthropocene. This greeting is belated, of course. We have all been here the whole
of our lives, without knowing it for most of our days. The Anthropocene is a span of geological and evolutionary time (technically, an epoch) during which humans have had an outsized role in transforming the natural world, most of that time without knowledge and awareness of the consequences of their actions. Those who use the term argue about when the epoch begins. Does it start with the Industrial Revolution, late in the 18th century, hastening around 1850? Or does it make sense to push the date back in time to the first appearances of agriculture in scattered populations, as much as 10,000 years before the present, or even earlier?

№ 375: Burke's Slaw (it depends on how you slice it)

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. — Edmund Burke

Mr. Burke? Sir, with all due respect,
you are ignoring cause and effect.
What we do (or we neglect)
has little effect in retrospect.
Wherever, whenever man is detected,
surely then evil must be expected.

And, then, it must be understood,
what you say is evil may be my good.

In conclusion:
I've no wish to be rude in this.
but, Burke, you are platitudinous.

№ 370: Our Ancestors

Down through the ages, history's pages
say the best, in the end, win.
We relish these stories of long ago glories. . .
tell them to children without chagrin.

Our ancestors knew what they had to do
to make sure their descendants would be me and you.
It was not always pretty. It was not always fair.
(It rarely is begetting an heir.)

Brave and true, noble and strong,
they killed any men who didn't belong,
bred the daughters and wives (most pretty, most blessed)
which on the whole cut down on incest.

Give a cheer for these rapists and murderers,
the ancestors we hold so dear.
If they had not been murderers and rapists,
you and I would not be here.

№ 368: To Bee Or Knot

NYT: The Wellness World’s Buzzy New Best Friend (Paywall)
Bees and all that come with them — minus the stings — are the latest beauty obsession.

When a forraging bee
finds blooming flowers,
she flies to her hive and dances,
telling her sisters
direction and distance
to delicious, nutritious bowers.
There is no celebration,
no congratulation,
although there is a buzz.
All of her sisters
get right to work because
that is what a bee does.

Would the hive thrive
or even survive
had she not done her dance?
Bees, unlike us,
are not individualist.
A bee sees no need to “advance”.

For many a year,
bees have been here.
Bees saw T-rex depart.
Though we make a mess
and cause them distress,
bees, being ever so smart,
will carry on after we've gone.
Bees are stars,
ours is a bit part.

№ 367.1: EXTRA! Obviously

Far be it from me to ever condemn,
BUT. . .that things are a mess is all down to THEM!

If only THEY
would leave for Mars* —
get off this Earth,
which is rightfully ours —
things would be peaceful
we would be thankful
and, for a time,
possibly tranquil
until that unhappy day when
one of us becomes a THEM.

№ 359: Appalling Epistle To The Hopeful

What if the world turned upside down,
“South” on the “top”, “North” on the “bottom”?
If conquered and conqueror were to change places
languages, cultures, religions and races,
“perps” and “vics” would, of course, switch,
exploiters would be the exploited,
making a significant difference in which
groups are indicted and which invited.

Our nature does not have better angels
when we are dealing with “strangers”.
Instinct, experience and history predict
everything different endangers.

The arc of that history is not, in fact, long.
It does not bend, it meanders
slowly (or quickly) going nowhere,
dumping rampant disasters on hapless bystanders.

It is what it is,
say a prayer or a curse
because under Trump
it's getting worse.

№ 325: The Way Things Are Now

How is it
everyone's
always so sure
they have God*
on their side?
Why cannot anyone
ever acknowledge
we are only along
for the ride?
Which when it's bumpy
makes everyone grumpy
so we look
for someone to blame,
to persecute
or punch in the snoot
because being different
makes them fair game.
“Winners” and “losers”,
“perps” and “vics”,
“cowboys” and “Indians”,
“slickers” and “hicks”,
Jets vs Giants,
Mets vs Yanks,
“Mutual tolerance?
Really? NO THANKS!”

No. 320: Doin' What Comes Natcherly?

"It wasn't until human impacts started becoming a factor that large body sizes made mammals more vulnerable to extinction,. . .Homo sapiens are identified as a species around 200,000 years ago, so this occurred not very long after the birth of us as a species. It just seems to be something that we do.

Wherever we go, the damage accrues
because killing things is what we do.
We eliminate big things then start on the the small,
it only ends when there's nothing at all.

Maybe someday when the meteor hits
blasting advanced civilization to bits
without all of us the Earth can start to mend.
I'd say the odds are — at best?! — one-in-ten.

No. 287: Oh, The Humanity II

Study humanity
and you will find
we are the one thing
we have on our mind.
This excessive obsession with
our own kind
leaves the rest of “Creation”
in a bit of a bind.

Ignoring what was
learned by Copernicus,
we persist in insisting
it's all about us.
Jews, Christians, Muslims
point to the Bible
(a text widely seen
as unreliable)
which says in Genesis 1:26,

we're in God's image,
his divine Xerox®.
This grants us “dominion”.
(In our opinion.)

If you study humanity
here's what to expect.
Delusions of agency. . .
and of effect.

No. 286: Tell Me Why

Since we don't hate former pets —
dogs, fishes, birds, cats —
and (sometimes) not fathers and mothers,
how do you explain
our near total disdain
for ex-friends, ex-spouses, ex-lovers?

No. 273: “Intelligence” (or Knowing Our Place)

A bad idea
Intelligence” is, it turns out.
Whatever idiot thought of it,
should be shot and taken out.

And though it may vex us,
it's better than sex is:
that urge to keep going
all the while knowing
we're actually going
nowhere.
How is that fair?

Nature creates us,
sex agitates us,
thus forcing us
to propagate us.

We overrate us
(surprise, surprise)
casting ourselves
as the good guys.
An iffy surmise.

We cannot know
what all of this means.
We're merely extras
in some crowd scenes.

No. LXXXI: On Being Human

Are humor, art and mistaken beliefs
(plus abhorrence of urine and feces)

what distinguish as a species?
