№ 612: Free Will. . .Until (eh, mate?)

LIKE FREE LUNCH ONLY MORESO, June 6

We may have a little bit of free will.
Until we're waylaid by puberty.
Ovaries ripen, testes descend.
And then:
chronic, lifelong lack of salubrity.

We become a scramble
of pubic hair brambles,
mammary glands, facial stubble.
Then it is only a matter of time
before we find we're in trouble.

Fullness of lips,
biceps and hips:
the deceiving tips
of the sexberg.
Alluring means
developed by genes
to confuse the senses
and override reason.
We come into season —
defeated, defenseless —
and as intended
mating commences.

It may appear
this is our idea.
Tommyrot!
It is not!

№ 582: Œdipus Perplex (ah gnats!)

Belief, be it in science or some other god —
please believe me I say this with charity —
is mental illness if only because
believers believe there is clarity
somewhere and they can find it.
(Or there will be once they've defined it.)

Humans think themselves witty.
They believe they achieve the real nitty-gritty.
Therefore their ends can be rather unpretty
as Œdipus “saw” as he sought to know more.
(He was so open-minded, he ended self-blinded.)

A gnat understands being a gnat.
And being a gnat, leaves it at that,
content in knowing that that is that.
Had Œd been a gnat, I have no doubt that
his end would never have come down to that.
(Although he may have died with a splat.)

Whether small insect or royal and great,
at the end of the day your FATE is your fate.

№ 512: Pandora's Pithos (a pithy pity)

You can’t think yourself out of instinct.
Procreate. You know the drill.
Thinking, at best, helps you tread water,
postponing drowning in seas of “godswill”.
Einstein and Darwin, (in theory) knew better,
but stuck with the program down to the letter.

Predestination, evolution and FATE —
leave little room for free will.
Everyone's born back of ball number eight.
Set expectation to nil.

№ 501: What's It All About, Alfie?

Is there a purpose,
is there a point?
What if the universe
is just out of joint?
H. Saps.have been at it
now for some years.
What have we to show —
besides bankrupting Sears?

If every success
eventually fails,
I'd say somewhere out there
there's a thumb on the scales.
In the days when we preyed
on multiple gods
there maybe were
much better odds.
If one of those gods
liked who you are
(and no other objected),
they made you a star.

Today it is grimmer.
Just heaven or hell.
There may be a distinction
but I cannot tell
a significant difference —
suffering and boredom?
You ignored “The Big Y”
or you adored him,
thinking you had
freedom to choose
the name of the game
you were destined lose.

No. 197.1: EXTRA! Une Demitasse de Veritas

Regarding whatever the matter at hand,
you're mistaken if you think you “understand”.

Ancestors took chances
and you are here.
If things worked out differently,
you'd be nowhere.

It's the toss of a coin,
it's fate, “them's the breaks”.
No telling what difference
anything makes.

I know, I know!
You've got greater “insight”,
but Coach down third base line
signs, “Take two, hit to right.”

Keep your head down.
DO NOT volunteer.
And, (BIG!) if you're lucky,
you may see next year.

No. CLIII: What Fate Awaits Us

after these months —
which seem like years —
it is clear Trump
is playing at Lear
(Lear as in Shakespeare
not as in Norman)...
on the horizon
hurricanes storm in

will Trump magic
turn comedy tragic
with Ryan-McConnell
as Regan and Goneril
his crowd, Cordelia,
miss-iled by Korea —
good daughter, bad daughters,
Trump, us — all slaughtered

the curtain descends
la commedia ends...
makes fatal sense
to President Pence —
aglow in the dark,
the remnant's monarch
